Alfonso "Al" Merola was born 9 January 1904 in Manhattan, New York.
According to the Certificate and Record of Birth, Luigi, Al's father, was 40 and Rosa, Al's mother, was 34 at the
time of Al's birth. In addition, the same certificate indicated that there where 9
previous children born to the family and that 8 were still living. The eight still living does not
include Al, so working backwards it would be (1) Fanny, (2) Bill, (3) Joseph, (4) Anthony,
(5) Angie, (6) a Merola child, (7) Amelia/Mellie, (8) Mary and (9) a Merola child. If the
previous children number of 9 is accurate, then we do not have the information for two children..
Al married Lucy (possibly Lucia) Leo, about 1925. Uncle Al and Aunt Lucy have three daughters:
Theresa, Marilyn and Alma. I am sorry to report that Marilyn passed away in 2004, only weeks before my wife
and I would have had the opportunity to have met her. We did have the pleasure that summer of meeting and
spending a weekend with Alma, and I believe we all three enjoyed that.
Theresa,the oldest, married Donald Melillo and have two children Karen and Donald. Marilyn married Edward
Simko and they have five boys, Edward, John, Tom, David and Bill. Alma married Robert
Gironda and have three children Robert, Suzanne and Lisa.
This paragraph was added April 2004 and at this time Marilyn's first four boys were married. I wish to
thank Alma for her help to date in filling in some blank spots in the Al Merola section.
We will keep adding to this and each sibling section. As we make more information available
we hope and pray that this and all the family information will be of interest to the
grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all others that follow.
